Rogue One Character spotlight.

Rogue One Characters.

Star Wars movies have always made stars not hired them but Rogue One is different in that respect, there is a blend of veteran actors such as Madds Mikkelsen as Galen Erso and lesser known actors such as Felicity Jones who has a few big titles to her name but hasn't been given that one role that makes her stand out, until now. Here are my thoughts on the characters in Rogue One and their portrayals.

Jyn Erso Played by Felicity Jones.
Jyn is the main protagonist for Rogue One and so her casting was very important, it needed to be someone who could make a female character look badass much like Carrie Fisher did with Princess Leia. Felicity Jones does that very well without making Jyn seem cold. Throughout the movie Jyn has a lot of emotion to go through, be it despair as her father is killed in front of her or the feeling of honour as she rallies the group that later becomes 'Rogue One' to scarif. Jyn shows that she is willing to do whatever she needs to in order to help the rebellion succeed so that her father’s death and hard work isn't in vain. Jyn shows the rebellion what 'Hope' really is by taking a gamble on Scarif which pays off.

Character rating 9.5/10

Galen Erso Played by Madds Mikkelsen.
Galen Erso is the man who created the Death Star, the most powerful weapon in the galaxy capable of obliterating a whole planet. This meant that he had to be cast as someone strong and sinister, now there aren’t many men in the world who can play a strong sinister character better than the veteran Madds Mikkelsen. Erso has a strong air about him, you feel as if he is always in control of his own fate until the very moment he dies. Mikkelsen portrays him as a good father and a hard worker and for someone in charge of building the death star you’d only expect him to be one of those things. The character himself has a lot of depth from wanting to look after his family to being forced to work for the Empire he has a lot to be careful of especially trying to purposely flaw the death star for the use of the rebels. His sacrifices ultimately come good as the death star is destroyed by the rebels thanks to his planning.

Character rating 9/10

Cassian Andor played by Diego Luna

Andor is a rebel captain and does as he is told, he is loyal and strong willed but is less willing to risk his own well being or make big decisions that others would. Luna plays Andor like a total good guy even though at times his actions are questionable. He begins his relationship with Jyn in charge and soon falls to her strong leadership skills and is willing to take order from her. From the first scene Andor is seen as a resourceful guy who is clever which is seen several times throughout the movie on Eadu and Scarif.

Character rating 8/10

Orson Krennic played by Ben Mendelsohn
Krennic is an imperial leader and much like other imperial leader is not low in self confidence and smarts, he knows how to get what he wants, be it by killing or other harsh means. He wants control of his own project an throughout the movie shows that he is more than capable of taking charge until power is taken from him by Grand Moff Tarkin. This is what really unhinges him. Mendelsohn has a strong career behind him and brings intensity much like Peter Cushing did in the original Star Wars movie, you know he is in charge and scenes such as the one he has when Vader is first seen, show he can bring that intensity and create great work. Krennic is eventually undone by a Galen Erso just be more intelligent than him, he tries all he can to stop Rogue One but by then its too late.

Character rating 9/10

KS2-0 Voiced by Alan Tudyk
KS2-0 is the first Droid we see in the movie, he is an imperial droid stolen and reprogrammed by the rebel alliance to aid them. He also serves as the movies comedy much like Drax in the Guardians of the galaxy film he says what is on his mind, several times blurting out the very lows odds at which a plan is successful much to the anger of his partner Andor. KS2-0 shows that he is very capable of learning like a human even showing emotion towards other characters and getting upset when Jyn shoots a similar droid questioning ‘if she knew it wasn’t him’ he eventually sacrifices him self for the good of the alliance after doing everything he can to help Jyn and Andor.

Character rating 7.5/10

Saul Gerrera Played by Forest Whitaker
Saul is a rebel outside of the rebel alliance, he is a militant leader who is very careful about who he lets near him. He looked after Jyn whilst she was young and now lives on Jedha, a war torn planet being stripped of the valuable Kyber Crystal that the empire needs for the death star’s weapon. He is known to have been a problem to the empire for a long time but not been caught. He understands when it is time to give up and Whitaker, another veteran gives a great portrayal of a man who is just holding on for hope that something good will happen and to not see the imperial flag fly high anymore. His eventual death is him acknowledging that he has fought all he can and it is time for him to give up.

Character rating 8/10

Chirrut Imwe played by Donnie Yen
Imwe is one of the most interesting characters in this movie, he is former guard for the now ruined Jedi temple on Jedha and provides us with another view into the force as a living thing, he talks of how energy surrounds a person before they are going to do something. Most of the people around him react like they think he is crazy to believe such a strange old religion, none of the people around him have seen or have proof of the force existing with further makes them wonder when Imwe believes in it. He falls valiantly using the force to guide him to the comms transmitter switch where he is eventually killed. Yen does some great work as Imwe especially as he is blind and wise two things that give the character such depth when looking at his physical and mental traits.

Character rating 8.5/10

Baze Malbus played by Wen Jiang

Malbus is best friends with Imwe although you wouldn’t think it due to his constant teasing of the force and his rituals, he is the heavy gunner, the guy who is straight forward with his work and is always there to help when needed. He boats an interesting arsenal of weapons which makes him one of the more fun characters to watch during actions scenes because you never know what hes going to pull out next. Jiang is a strong actor who makes Malbus looks like a legit tough guy so when he finally gives in to Imwe and opens himself to the force in his final moments it’s a real shock.

Character rating 7/10

Bodhi Rook played by Riz Ahmed
Bodhi is the defector, the man Galen Erso trust to take spread word of the death stars’ creation and bring the message to Saul Gerrera stating how to destroy it. Bodhi really is wimp when we first see him, Ahmed showcases a great range of facial expressions in Bodhis first scene as he believes he is being taken for as a liar by Saul and his group and that they are going to do away with him. Eventually Bodhi dies by giving even MORE to the rebel alliance than just the way to defeat the death star, he is killed when trying to establish comms with the above rebel fleet and a grenade is thrown into the shuttle he is in. He starts the movie as a wimpy defector but by the movies end it’s a sad loss and he is a hero.

Character rating 7/10

That’s all the main cast but there are a few other who have lesser parts, not to say they are lesser characters that need addressing.

Mon Mothma played by Genevieve O'Reilly

Reprises her role from the deleted scenes of Revenge of the sith as Mon Mothma the rebel alliance leader and does a solid job.

Grand Moff Tarkin is back and is created using CGI as Peter Cushing is no longer with us(Guy Henry acted as a base which they filmed around) it was obvious it was CGI it wasn’t bad work at all and for the amount of time Tarkin spent on screen it was justifiable to not replace him and he still seemed as menacing as ever.

Bail Oregana played by Jimmy Smits

He reprises his role from Episode 2 & 3 as Bail Oregana princess Leia’s adopted father.

R2D2 and C3PO are in there with Anthony Daniels cameoing as 3PO.

Ingvild Deila was used as a base for the CGI that played Princess Leia in the final moments of the movie that continued onto A New Hope.

Oh, and of course James Earl Jones brings back his brilliant vocals as Darth Vader who seems even stronger than ever in Rogue One. A particular scene towards the end where he stands tall in the dark only lit up by his lightsaber is a highlight of the whole movie.

Rogue one will have launched the careers of some and continued to showcase why some are considered such great actors or actresses. The new batch of characters we are given are nothing short of great and interesting.

Rogue One: A star Wars Story

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 15/12/16

So, Rogue one was released today and I went to see it in the early hours of the morning along with many others. Here are my initial thoughts from my first time watching, no doubt there will be things I’ve missed but I’ll try my best.

First, Rogue one isn't like any other Star Wars movie we've ever seen, it's darker, its grittier and much more real than the previous seven movies, which I liked a lot. It plays with your emotions throughout and is the perfect way to bridge that gap between Revenge of the Sith (ROTS) and A New Hope (ANH). The movie follows Jyn Erso, The daughter of Galen Erso. Who is Galen Erso? and why is he so significant to the movie and the Star Wars universe? well that’s because he is the man responsible for the development of the death star as the lead scientist for the Empire. The movie Reveals that Galen was split up from Jyn whilst she was aa very young age and was taken by the Empire to help further their research and development into new weaponry. We see that Galen was prepared for the empire to come looking for him, supposedly because he had been working with them in the past, this meant that when Orson Krennic an imperial commander comes knocking Jyn knows where to hide.

We then move onto the present day, which seems to be weeks or months before the events of A New Hope due to the death star being completed. An imperial pilot (Bodhi Rook) is said to have defected from the empire and talks of a weapon the empire are building that is a 'Planet Destroyer'. Of course, he is talking about the death star. He travels to Jedha the historical planet that serves as a sacred place to the Jedi (This planet reminds me of a modern day Aleppo, war torn and a barren state) to give the plans to the militant 'Saul Gerrera', Saul is the man who came for Jyn when her father was taken and is livening on Jedha with a group of rebels who are thwarting imperial movements to extract Kyber crystal from the planet which is needed to power the death star, Gerrara is doing this of his own accord as he has no trust for the rebel alliance. When Bodhi arrives he is taken to Saul like a hostage, he gives Saul a hologram from Galen Erso who it turns out sent Bodhi to Saul to tell him about the death star.

Meanwhile the Rebel Alliance has captured Jyn from the Empire and taken her back to Yavin 4. They plan to use her to Saul Gerrera to engage with them in any way because Saul trusts Jyn. Jyn travels with Cassian Andor a Rebel leader and his Imperial droid programmed to help the rebellion 'KS2-0' to Jedha to meet with Saul, there is a skirmish in Jedha city which is instigated by Gerreras Rebels, Jyn and Andor are taken to Gerrera where he shows Jyn the message her father sent him. Galen speaks of his love for Jyn and always doing what he could to help her. The main point of the message is that he has worked hard to cover up that he has purposely placed a weak spot on the death star (the exhaust vent we all know so well from ANH, that’s why it was so obvious, it was put there on purpose )

Up to now we've seen that Jyn is a badass which is a great thing for the Star Wars universe as we haven’t seen many powerful females other than Leia and Padme. By this point Jyn and Andor have met up with Chirrut Îmwe & Baze Malbus. They were both former guards at the Jedi temple on Jedha which has been ruined by the empires search for Kyber crystal. Imwe is blind and so has adopted a strong faith in the force to guide him frequently reciting ‘I am the force, the force is with me’ like a prayer and at one point explaining that dark energy surrounds a person who is intending to kill another. Malbus is a weapon wielding arsenal on legs who has Imwes back on several occasions.

Jyn finally gets to see her father one more time at an imperial research facility on Eadu where he works, Galen is confronted by Krennic who has found out that the Bodhi had help in defecting and releasing top secret information, Krennic threatens Galen’s team before Galen himself stands up and takes the blame. His team are killed anyway, by this point a rebel fleet is attacking the platform they are on and inadvertently kill Galen as Jyn watches. They trade final words as Galen dies in her arms.
The crew of Jyn, Andor, Imwe, Malbus and KS2-0 head back to Yavin 4 where on the way Jyn discovers that Andor had been told to kill Galen as to stop him furthering the Empires research any further. When the crew arrive back at Yavin 4 there is no agreement between several parties as to whether they want to go to 'Scariff' the planet on which Galen had told them they could find the complete copy of the death star plans. Unofficially Jyn, Andor, Imwe, Malbus and a group of 20 or so rebels made up from spies & assassins take a stolen imperial shuttle to Scariff where a battle ensues on the beaches. Andor Jyn and KS2-0 make it inside using costumes of imperials as disguise. they make their way to the central vault of the data tower and KS2-0 begins sifting through the information to find the plans. The plans are named 'Stardust' by Galen in reference to what he called Jyn as a child. Meanwhile Bodhi sacrifices himself after the rebel fleet intersect radio comms notifying them that the group had gone to Scariff anyway. and are being kept off the planet by a defence shield, Bodhi dies whilst connecting the comms systems which tell the fleet that they need to open the shield in order for Jyn and Andor to transmit the death star plans.

Obviously, we all know how this ends and if you don't you probably won’t understand a word I’ve written. The plans are sent up to the Rebel fleet just in time as the death star is unleashed onto Scariff utilising a fraction of its power to destroy the planet, and everyone on it, this includes Jyn and Andor who we see accept their fate on the beach as the planet disintegrates. Above we see Darth Vader and his fleet dismantle the Rebels. their ships are destroyed and Vader personally boards the rebels largest ship in search of the plans or to destroy anyone who would be able to get them back to Yavin 4. This scene shows up to the beginning of A New Hope, is sees Vader kill nearly a dozen rebel troops. one last troop makes a physical copy of the plans which are then give to princess Leia who is aboard a smaller ship which is dispatched from the main larger ship. This ship the one we see being chased by an imperial star destroyer in the first scene in Star Wars ever. Leia ends the movie with her only line when she is asked what the rebel trooper has just handed to her, she replies with 'Hope' hence the title 'A New Hope'

My overall thought on the movie is that it's incredible, the story works well the characters were unique and were built very well, even guys like Gerrera who arent on screen is built very well before his death as Jedha is destroyed by the death star. The movie needed a quick build as we eventually lose everyone from the shuttle that was dubbed 'Rogue one' by Bodhi so there would be no more time to build these characters as they are a one-time thing.
There were fun spots and a good mix between old and new characters that linked the story to the original trilogy. We see R2D2 and C3PO for a short second as 3PO is perplexed as to why everyone is going to Scariff and that they aren't ever told anything. we see Mon Mothma head the rebel alliance, and we also see Bail Organa who has an interesting conversation with Mothma. She asks him to find help from her 'Jedi friend'(assuming she means Obi Wan Kenobi) and to only reach out to someone he trusts to find him, to which he replies 'id trust her with my life' in reference to him asking Leia to find Obi wan ( Help me Obi Wan, you're my only hope)
Darth Vader is given a decent amount of onscreen time enough to belittle and scare Krennic and destroy the whole rebel fleet. One scene of Vader stands out more than any though. There is a scene in which we see him in a test tube type thing. No suit, no helmet, but we know its him because it’s that same hollow breathing, its gives us more of a glimpse into Darth Vader under the suit and shows that he’s very fragile physically. Vader also has a scene when he first boards the rebel ship in which he is stood tall, his lightsaber flicks out, and on a big screen he looks as if he’s coming for YOU, it’s a moment that made me take a breath, and one that'll probably make a very good poster.

There was always going to be the issue of time in this movie, essentially it had to be the same cast as in 1977 or new characters, most of this movie is made of new characters or ones that are easy to replicate which is fine apart from two who were too big to leave out, that is obviously Princess Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin. Now Carrie fisher obviously has aged a bit since she was 19 in the original Star Wars and Peter Cushing died long ago. So, what they decided to do was use CGI like Fast and Furious did when Paul Walker died. Now it was obvious that both were CGI but I think that adds to the movie, no one else has the same look as peter Cushing did and he couldn’t be replaced, and Leia is so important she needed to look the same for continuity sake.

The Movie was very strong and quite honestly, I was much more impressed by this then the force awakens (not that I didn't like it) and if Disney want to do more of these back-story time filler type movies then I’ll be happy if all turn out like Rogue One.

Oh, and one last fun cameo we see on Jedha, two familiar faces, who both don't like the look of Luke Skywalker, one of whom has the death sentence on 12 systems and one of whom ends up with one arm in A New Hope (In case you don’t follow, they are Ponda Baba & Dr Evazan from Mos Eisley cantina)

Darth Skywalker...

December 18th 2015 Star Wars force awakens is released. THE biggest movie of the year, THE biggest movie of all time (possibly). There is a lot of speculation as to what will happen within the film, who the new cast are playing and what their roles are, and how have things changed over 30 years since Return of the jedi, since we know it's been that long at least. But it not just the new characters that people are wondering about, its confirmed that we will be seeing the 'Original Trilogy' cast return that being Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker. So what have the original cast been up to over 30 years since the battle of Endor? Has Han solo become an experienced squadron leader? Is princess Leia or who we have learnt is going as General Oregana at the helm of the rebellion and continuing to rebuild the republic like her mother before her? Are R2-D2 and C3PO still in a love hate relationship? One of the main theories going around is that Luke Skywalker, the main character of the Original Trilogy will or already has turned to the dark side and followed in his dad Anakin's footsteps. Im going to addressing the claim that Luke is actually an 'Agent of Evil' as Yoda once called it.

Im going to start by defining what it is to be a Jedi. The Jedi are peaceful, reasonable and always look to do things without the loss of life. They do this by removing their emotions from any decision they make, that is why you see so many young Jedi being trained and repeatedly Yoda reminds both Anakin and Luke that they are both too old to be trained Anakin being 10 and Luke being 19 , because by that point in their life they have formed emotional attachments that will blur their visions.
This is quite different to the dark side, they harness their emotions and incorporated with the force they use their anger to get whatever they want, such as a giant planet like structure capable of actually destroying a real planet. So why would Luke join the dark side? he's just destroyed the second incarnation of the death star, the Emperor is seemingly dead, and he made peace with his father, all whilst the rebellion is removing the empire from the galaxy and slowly regain control. The dark side feeds off of hatred and anger, sure Luke is probably angry at the things that have happened along the way like losing his father and seeing his friends captured and nearly die but in the end everything turned out alright.
Luke begins his jedi training fully after Hoth Battle when Ben Kenobi tells him to go and meet Master Yoda on Dagobah. Once the introductions have been made and everyone is fully weirded out by Yoda, he explains to Luke that 'Too old he is' to be trained after Luke begins to get frustrated with himself, Yoda eventually realises that Luke is the Jedis only hope of defeating the empire but already you can see that Luke has anger within him just like his father. As Luke continues his training Yoda takes him to the cave of evil, where he is instructed go in and all that will be in there is what he takes in with him, now at first it would seem like Yoda means any physical things, but once in the cave Luke meets darth vader, or a vision of him, seemingly Luke defeats him and Vaders mask explodes to reveal Lukes face, could this be a foreshadow to episode 7 that actually when Yoda was telling Luke that whatever was in the cave was what Luke took in with him, does Luke have the dark side within him and is that why he appears within Darth Vader's mask?
The growth of the dark side within Luke is evident further when he gets a feeling that Leia and Han are being tortured as they are captured at Bespin, Luke in ruthless and reckless fashion abandons his training to go and save them which ultimately lead to han still being frozen in carbonite, Luke losing a hand and everyone else barely making it out alive after Lando double turns to then help them out.  This demonstrates Luke letting his emotions getting the better of him, going against the Jedi values of not letting emotion affect judgement.
In return of the jedi Luke seems to have a dark presence around him, especially in Jabbas Palace donning new black robes just like Anakin in episodes 2 and 3. Eventually thought began to creep into peoples minds that actually Luke could turn or die at the end of the movie, where Palpatine and Vader have him captured, Palpatine gives luke the option to 'Strike him down' and 'Join the dark side' amazingly Luke tries to, if not for Vaders interception Luke would have killed the Emperor. Luke uses his anger to defeat vader and when he cuts off Vaders arm, he then realises that actually they aren't too dissimilar as they both have the robotic arm and that through their anger they have both made mistakes which have caused them to become deformed in some way, Vader more so which Luke is seemingly on the path to.
The fact that we have seen literally one arm that we aren't even 100% sure is his in the build up to 'The Force Awakens' suggests that there has been an obvious change to Luke that would be very much apparent to anyone who sees him at all and so he has been kept out of the limelight with no merchandise, trailer appearances or any official word on what is going on with Luke 30 years after everything seemed so positive, is Luke even going to play much part in episode 7 and maybe it is about trying to find Luke as some theorists have speculated only to find out he is isolated, angry and losing control of the force. We do see a clip that shows Leia looking worried and from past experience we know that Luke and Leia communicate using the force that they both posses, just like at Bespin when luke is hanging with one hand after fighting Vader. Could Luke be in trouble or has he been in trouble for a while and Leia has been feeling it all this time but in order to help him she is keeping it quiet.
We can't be sure of anything in the Star Wars universe but with Star Wars The Force Awakens due to open in just 5 days we don't have long to wait.
